The original instrument was possibly an 8 or 10 course lute. It was built by Hans Burkholtzer in Füssen in 1596 and is now shown in the Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum as number SAM 44 as a 13 course baroque lute. A label inside says that Thomas Edlinger converted it to an 11 course lute, while it is not known who added the two more courses.
