About the hanns burkholtzer as a 13course baroque lute

Back: 17 to 21 ribs of cypress

Neck: Soft wood with marquetry of ebony and maple.

Pegbox: Maple with marquetry of ebony and maple.

Soundboard: Spruce

Frets: 9 tied gut frets / 3 wooden frets

Bridge: Fruitwood with a top of ebony

The original instrument was possibly an 8 or 10 course lute. It was built by Hans Burkholtzer in Füssen in 1596 and is now shown in the Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum as number SAM 44 as a 13 course baroque lute. A label inside says that Thomas Edlinger converted it to an 11 course lute, while it is not known who added the two more courses.
